EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Swiss Centre foyer in Coventry Street, Leicester Square, City of Westminster, Greater London. Designed by David Aberdeen and constructed by John Laing & Son Ltd. , this architectural marvel stood tall until its demolition in 2008. The Swiss Centre was not just a shopping center; it was a hub of activity and culture. As you gaze at this image, you can almost feel the energy emanating from the bustling market area that lies beyond the foyer. The shops on street level were filled with vibrant displays, enticing passersby to explore their offerings. Above them, an eleven-storey building housed offices and residential units, creating a dynamic mix of work and living spaces. The Swiss Fair podium beneath served as a haven for food enthusiasts seeking delectable dining experiences. With its array of restaurants catering to various tastes and preferences, it became a melting pot of culinary delights. Although no longer standing today, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of an era gone by. It encapsulates both the architectural brilliance and social significance that made the Swiss Centre such an iconic landmark in 1960s London.
