EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of the Boy Scouts Association. Standing proudly on a road in Holmbury St Mary, Surrey, is a line of boy scouts and their scout master, frozen in time by photographer Katherine J. Macfee on the 23rd of May, 1912. The image showcases these young boys carrying scout staffs and bedrolls, preparing for an exciting camping or pioneering trip. Their eager faces reflect the spirit of adventure that was instilled in them through scouting activities. It is worth noting that this photograph was taken merely five years after Robert Baden-Powell organized the first-ever scout camp on Brownsea Island. It is highly likely that this particular group belonged to the Dorking District Scouts, who were established four years prior in 1908. As pioneers within their community, they embraced Baden-Powell's vision and embarked on countless adventures together. Katherine J. Macfee's skillful composition immortalizes these young scouts' dedication to learning valuable skills such as teamwork, self-reliance, and leadership – qualities that would shape them into responsible citizens later in life. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history captured over a century ago, we are reminded of how scouting has continued to empower generations of children worldwide with its timeless values and unwavering commitment to personal growth.
