EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Backworth Hall, located in Backworth, North Tyneside. The image captures the main south elevation of this historic building, which now serves as the clubhouse for Backworth Miners Welfare. Dating back to 1778, Backworth Hall was acquired by the Backworth Colliery Miners Welfare Scheme in 1934. Today, it proudly stands as a Grade II Listed structure and offers various recreational facilities such as bowling greens, cricket pitches, golf courses, archery ranges, and croquet lawns. The photograph not only highlights the architectural beauty of this traditional English house but also symbolizes the rich sports heritage associated with it. From its origins rooted in the mining industry to becoming a welfare club for employees and their families, Backworth Hall has played an integral role in fostering community spirit through sports and recreation. Through Simon Inglis' lens, we are transported back in time to witness both the grandeur of this historical landmark and its significance within local history. This print is a testament to how buildings can evolve over centuries while still preserving their original charm and purpose.
