EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the essence of Charlotte Street in Manchester, showcasing Fraser House, a former warehouse that stands proudly on the corner of Charlotte Street and Portland Street. The image is taken from the south, with a pile of rubble in the foreground hinting at a turbulent past. Constructed between 1855 and 1860 by Edward Walters, this magnificent red brick building with sandstone dressings served as a textile manufacturers warehouse. Its impressive four storeys and basement are adorned with five bays facing south and three bays to the east. A poignant reminder of darker times can be found on the south facade where a sign reads "AIR RAID SHELTER/200 PERSONS". This chilling inscription transports us back to World War II when this area was subjected to devastating air raids.
