EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant atmosphere of Parliament Hill Fields Lido, located in Gospel Oak, Camden, Greater London. The image showcases the bustling edge of the pool, with its unique feature of a stainless steel tank lining. Designed by Harry Arnold Rowbotham and T. L. Smithson, Parliament Hill Fields Lido opened its doors to swimmers in 1938 as one of thirteen lidos constructed by the London County Council between 1909 and 1939. Over the years, it has served as a popular destination for sport and recreation enthusiasts. In 2004-2005, major refurbishment took place at this iconic outdoor swimming pool. As part of these renovations, a groundbreaking addition was made - the installation of Britain's first-ever stainless steel tank lining for an outdoor pool. The photograph beautifully captures elements that define summer: people enjoying their holidays under sunny skies amidst a heatwave. The vivid colors of blue water contrasted against red and yellow accents add to the lively ambiance. Notably present are essential figures ensuring safety and assistance within this aquatic haven - a diligent pool attendant overseeing activities while lifeguards stand ready to protect swimmers. Simon Inglis' remarkable print immortalizes both history and leisure; showcasing how Parliament Hill Fields Lido continues to be cherished by visitors seeking respite from hot summer days through invigorating swims or simply basking in its inviting surroundings.
