EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Roker Park Football Ground in all its glory. The image showcases the Main Stand and Fulwell End, as seen from the east, with the bustling Roker End stand during an exhilarating football game. Originally opened in 1898 for Sunderland Association Football Club, Roker Park was a beloved venue that witnessed countless sporting triumphs and memorable moments. In its early years, wooden stands adorned the stadium until renowned architect Archibald Leitch lent his expertise to design both the iconic Main Stand in 1929 and Clock Stand in 1936. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of this bygone era, as Roker Park met its unfortunate fate when it was demolished between 1997-1998. However, through this stunning visual representation, we can still appreciate the grandeur of this Victorian football ground. The lush green pitch provides a striking contrast against the vibrant red jerseys of players engaged in an intense match. It is evident that this hallowed ground served not only as a place for sport but also recreation and community bonding. Preserved by Historic England's collection, this print allows us to relive cherished memories associated with Roker Park while paying homage to its significant contribution to British football history.
