EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic St Andrews Church in Worcester, England, during a moment frozen in time - April 1942. Standing proudly on the banks of the majestic River Severn, this medieval church was once a prominent symbol of faith and architectural grandeur. Sadly, the passage of time took its toll on this magnificent structure. In 1948/49, due to concerns about its structural stability, St Andrews Church met an unfortunate fate and was demolished. However, amidst the loss and destruction that followed, one element managed to survive - the church tower. This enduring relic now stands as a testament to resilience against adversity. Affectionately known as Glovers Needle for its towering presence adorned with a spire reaching towards the heavens above, this iconic landmark has become an integral part of Worcester's skyline. Its significance is further recognized by being designated as a Grade II* listed building. In this photograph by George Bernard Mason from Historic England's collection, we are transported back in time to witness both the beauty and fragility of history. The tranquil river flows gently beneath it while nature's embrace is evident through surrounding trees. As we gaze upon this image today, let us reflect on how even though physical structures may crumble over time; their legacy lives on through memories and photographs like these – preserving our connection to our past for generations yet unborn.
