EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic George Hotel in Portsmouth, standing proudly on High Street. The image showcases the front of the hotel from a north-eastern perspective, with a lone man strolling past its grand entrance. The George Hotel holds great historical significance as it was at this very location that Horatio Nelson spent his final hours before embarking on the momentous Battle of Trafalgar. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when the building fell victim to an air raid in January 1941, resulting in its complete destruction. Today, where once stood this historic coaching inn now stands a modern block of flats known as George Court. While progress has transformed the site into something new and different, it is impossible to overlook the loss and destruction suffered by this cherished piece of history. Charles William Prickett's masterful photography immortalizes both the splendor and ultimate demise of the George Hotel. This print serves as a poignant reminder of how time can alter our surroundings but also highlights our collective responsibility to preserve and honor our heritage for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
