Thames Foundry, Dagenham Works JLP01_01_048_22
Ford Motor Company Works, Thames Foundry, Dagenham, Havering, Greater London. A view of the new foundry under construction at the Ford Motor Company Works, showing the east and part of the south elevation and the formation of roads in the foreground before the erection of structural steel.
The foundry opened in 1957 and cost £ 7.5 million to build. The building was a two-storey reinforced concrete structure, almost a quarter of a mile in length. The new facilities included kitchens and a canteen, toilet accommodation, a medical centre and a compressor house. There was also an ancillary building, 700 ft in length, roads to the site, a settling tank and ponds. It later closed in 1984. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive construction of the Thames Foundry at the Ford Motor Company Works in Dagenham, Greater London. Taken in the 1950s, it showcases the east and part of the south elevation of this mammoth two-storey reinforced concrete structure. The image also reveals the formation of roads in the foreground before structural steel was erected. The foundry, which opened its doors to workers in 1957, was a monumental feat costing an astounding £7.5 million to build. Stretching nearly a quarter of a mile in length, this state-of-the-art facility boasted not only production areas but also essential amenities for employees. These included kitchens and a canteen for nourishment during long shifts, toilet accommodation for comfort and convenience, a medical center for healthcare needs, and even a compressor house. Adjacent to this colossal structure stood an ancillary building that spanned an impressive 700 feet. Additionally, roads leading to the site were constructed along with vital infrastructure such as settling tanks and ponds. Sadly, despite its grandeur and significance within Ford's operations over several decades, Thames Foundry met its demise when it closed down permanently in 1984. This remarkable photograph offers us a glimpse into both past industrial prowess and architectural marvels while paying homage to those who labored tirelessly within these walls.
