EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stunning combination of structural glazing and an ornamental lake at Napp Laboratories in Cambridge Science Park. Two women can be seen standing beside the picturesque lake, which runs along the southern elevation of the laboratory building. Constructed in the 1980s by Laing Management Contracting for Napp Pharmaceutical Group, this architectural marvel was designed by Arthur Erickson Architects from Toronto. The complex consists of three interconnected buildings, housing pharmaceutical production facilities, research laboratories, administration offices, a restaurant, and an auditorium. One striking feature of this building is its elevated position on a concrete podium that sits 1200 mm above ground level. This design choice not only adds to its visual appeal but also provides a unique perspective for those inside. Additionally, the use of sloping precast concrete columns and solar reflective sloping double glazing known as structural glazing further enhances its aesthetic charm. The inclusion of an ornamental lake on the south side adds tranquility to this already remarkable structure. Surrounded by meticulously landscaped grounds, it creates a serene environment that complements both nature and architecture seamlessly. This print serves as a testament to the ingenuity and creativity displayed in constructing Napp Laboratories—an architectural gem nestled within South Cambridgeshire's scenic landscape.
