The Bridgewater Hall, Barbirolli Square, Manchester. Looking down on the angular projecting bays on the north-east side of the Bridgewater Hall during its construction, showing the buildings concrete frame and inner roof structure.
The Bridgewater Hall was designed as the home of the Halle Orchestra. Work on the site began in September 1993. The building was topped out in March 1995 and it was opened in September 1996. A double roof structure was one of the methods utilised to protect the auditorium from external noise. The building was also mounted on 270 GERB vibration isolation bearings to isolate the auditorium from the noise of traffic and trams, the services were housed in a separate plant tower, and the auditorium was surrounded by other accommodation.
