Surveying and a flotation tank JLP01_08_092770
Graythorp, Hartlepool. A flotation tank for an oil platform lying in the dry dock at Graythorp and a man carrying out surveying in the foreground.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, one thousand men were working on site to build a tubular structure which would support a drilling rig in the North Sea destined for the Forties Oilfield

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a fascinating juxtaposition between the old and the new in Graythorp, Hartlepool. In the foreground, we see a diligent man engrossed in surveying work, his focused gaze fixed on something beyond our view. Behind him lies an impressive sight - a flotation tank for an oil platform lying dormant in the dry dock. Taken in the early 1970s, this image showcases Laing Pipelines Offshore's ambitious project to construct the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of the former William Gray Shipyard. The company's vision was to create a space capable of building fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's monumental North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, this site had become a bustling hub of activity with one thousand men diligently working towards constructing a tubular structure that would support a drilling rig destined for Forties Oilfield in the North Sea. This photograph serves as both evidence and tribute to their hard work and dedication. The image not only highlights significant advancements made by marine engineering works during this era but also offers us insight into how these structures were built from scratch. It is truly remarkable to witness such progress unfold before our eyes through this stunning visual documentation from A© Historic England Archive.
