Graythorp, Hartlepool. A bird s-eye view of the oil platform Graythorp I lying on its side in the dry dock basin at Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. Graythorp I had its christening ceremony on June 4th and was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974, heading off for the Forties Oil Field 250 miles away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment in marine engineering history. The image showcases the impressive sight of the oil rig Graythorp I lying on its side in the dry dock basin at Graythorp, Hartlepool. From this bird's-eye view, one can truly appreciate the scale and complexity of this massive structure. The photograph takes us back to the early 1970s when Laing Pipelines Offshore undertook an ambitious project to construct a fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. This facility played a crucial role in supporting BP's North Sea Oil Project by constructing fixed platform drilling rigs. Graythorp I, featured prominently in this picture, had its christening ceremony on June 4th before being launched on Saturday 29th June 1974. It embarked on a long journey towards the Forties Oil Field located approximately 250 miles away. This image not only highlights the ingenuity and expertise involved in building such colossal structures but also serves as a testament to human determination and innovation within marine engineering during that era. Thanks to Historic England Archive for preserving this invaluable piece of history, allowing us to marvel at these extraordinary feats accomplished decades ago.
