Oil platform JLP01_10_02539
Graythorp, Hartlepool. A group of people in life jackets on the oil platform Graythorp II, seen during the float out from Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. The oil platform Graythorp I was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974 and on the weekend of 14th-15th June 1975, Graythorp II was named and floated out of the dock basin down the Seaton Channel to where it was handed over to its owners BP. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of the oil industry. The image showcases the oil platform Graythorp II, located in Hartlepool's Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock. A group of individuals, donning life jackets, can be seen standing on the platform during its float out from Graythorp. In the early 1970s, Laing Pipelines Offshore undertook an ambitious project to construct a dry dock capable of building fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's North Sea Oil Project. The result was the creation of Graythorp I and later Graythorp II. On June 29th, 1974, amidst great anticipation and excitement, Graythorp I was successfully launched into the waters. Following this triumph, on June 14-15th in 1975, it was time for its successor - Graythorp II - to make its grand entrance. The photograph not only highlights the impressive engineering feat achieved by Laing Pipelines Offshore but also pays homage to those who dedicated their skills and efforts to bring these monumental structures to life. It serves as a testament to their hard work and commitment within an industry that has played a vital role in global energy production.
