EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 1950s at the headquarters of the London to Yorkshire Motorway project in Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes. The image showcases a man and woman diligently loading a van with crates filled with an assortment of food and drink from the canteen. Their purpose? To provide sustenance for the hardworking staff dedicated to Section B of this monumental project. The M1, also known as the London to Yorkshire Motorway, was still in its infancy during this time. Opening its first 53 miles in November 1959, it connected Berrygrove in Hertfordshire (Junction 5) all the way up to Crick in Northamptonshire (Junction 18). This particular section's operations were expertly coordinated from Newport Pagnell. This photograph beautifully captures not only their dedication but also their teamwork as they load up supplies into what appears to be a vintage catering van. It serves as a testament to those who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes on one of Britain's most significant infrastructure projects. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this snapshot offers us a glimpse into an era where manual labor played an integral role in shaping our modern transportation network. Let us appreciate these unsung heroes who ensured that nourishment was readily available for those building our nation's highways while reminding us of how far we have come since then.
