Topping out ceremony JLP01_09_811082
MAYDAY HOSPITAL, LONDON ROAD, WEST THORNTON, CROYDON, GREATER LONDON. A group of people posed with celebratory drinks on the roof of the services block at Mayday Hospital during the topping out ceremony.
Laings Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound five phase redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The topping out of the services block at Mayday Hospital was aptly held on May Day. During the ceremony, an engraved silver trowel was presented to Denis Sweaney by Frank Bryer, joint managing director of the Construction Company. The occasion was also marked by the publication of Template ; the first in a series of printed information leaflets by the commissioning team, which described the topping out ceremony and provided a floor by floor diagram of the new facilities

Cheers to Progress - Celebrating the Topping Out Ceremony at Mayday Hospital
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by A© Historic England Archive, a group of jubilant individuals gather on the rooftop of the services block at Mayday Hospital in West Thornton, Croydon. With celebratory drinks in hand, they commemorate an important milestone - the topping out ceremony. Mayday Hospital's redevelopment project was awarded to Laings Southern Region as part of a multi-million pound five-phase initiative. The first phase involved constructing a new three-storey surgical block and service block, which would be connected to the main hospital complex by a bridge. As if destined for symbolism, the topping out ceremony took place on May Day itself. During this momentous occasion, Denis Sweaney was presented with an engraved silver trowel by Frank Bryer, joint managing director of the Construction Company. This gesture symbolized their dedication and craftsmanship that contributed to reaching this significant stage in construction. Adding further significance to the event was the release of "Template" marking its debut as part of a series of printed information leaflets created by the commissioning team. This inaugural edition provided detailed insights into the topping out ceremony and offered readers a floor-by-floor diagram showcasing all-new facilities. This remarkable photograph encapsulates both celebration and progress as it immortalizes an important chapter in Mayday Hospital's transformation journey towards providing enhanced healthcare services for Greater London's community.
