EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Lambeth, Greater London in 1936. Standing tall and proud against the city skyline is the iconic Lambeth Shot Tower, a remarkable feat of Georgian architecture. Designed by David Ridall Roper and built in 1826 for Thomas Maltby & Co. , this tower was once at the heart of the thriving lead industry. In this snapshot frozen in time, we are treated to a picturesque view across the River Thames towards the shot tower. The tranquil waters reflect its grandeur as it looms majestically on Belvedere Road. As our gaze moves closer to shore, we spot a passenger boat or ferry gracefully gliding along the river, adding an element of movement and life to this serene scene. Sadly, despite its historical significance and architectural beauty, this magnificent structure met its demise in 1962 when it was demolished to make way for progress - specifically, for what would become known as Queen Elizabeth Hall. However, thanks to Charles William Prickett's lens capturing this momentous sight over eight decades ago, we can still appreciate and marvel at Lambeth Shot Tower's grandeur today. This print serves as a poignant reminder of London's rich industrial past while also highlighting how urban landscapes evolve with time. It invites us to reflect on history's impact on our present-day surroundings and encourages us never to forget these significant landmarks that have shaped our cities into what they are today.
