Cumberland Market CXP01_01_071
CUMBERLAND MARKET, REGENTS PARK, CAMDEN, GREATER LONDON. A view looking south-east across Cumberland Market towards a terrace of houses on the east side of the square, south of Edward Street, and showing the Kings Head pub on the south side of the square.
Cumberland Market was a hay and straw market from the early 19th century to the late 1920s. By the early 1930s buildings in the area were demolished to make way for council housing and yet more of the area was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. The remaining buildings were demolished in 1950-51 and the Regents Park Estate was built on the site. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Cumberland Market, a once bustling hay and straw market in Camden, Greater London. The image showcases a view looking southeast across the market square towards a row of charming terraced houses on the east side. In the foreground stands the iconic Kings Head pub, adding character to this historic scene. Cumberland Market flourished from the early 19th century until its demise in the late 1920s. Sadly, much of this vibrant area was demolished in subsequent years for council housing development and further ravaged by bombing during World War II. By 1951, all remaining buildings were razed to make way for the construction of Regents Park Estate. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of loss and destruction that has shaped this neighborhood's history. It transports us back to an era when Georgian architecture dominated these streets and life revolved around trading goods at bustling markets. Charles William Prickett skillfully captured both beauty and tragedy within this single frame. His lens immortalizes an important chapter in London's past while also highlighting how urban landscapes evolve over time. As we admire this remarkable print, let us reflect upon how cities transform throughout history - sometimes through progress but often at great cost to their architectural heritage.
