Mark Hole Cottage MCF01_02_1305
MARK HOLE COTTAGE, THE CLIFFS, CHEDDAR, SEDGEMOOR, SOMERSET. Looking across the mill pond near Cox's Mill towards Mark Hole Cottage and Lion Rock on the hillside above.
The photograph also shows that at the time it was taken the land on the hillside was under cultivation, probably for strawberry growing. Strawberries are still grown on the slopes of Cheddar today and this south facing hillside would have been ideal for growing the soft fruit. The cottages at the bottom of the hill are marked on maps as Mark Hole Cottage but in 1985 were first designated as a listed building known as Cheddar Pottery. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of Mark Hole Cottage, nestled amidst the breathtaking landscape of Cheddar, Somerset. The image showcases a picturesque view across the mill pond near Cox's Mill, with Lion Rock majestically perched on the hillside above. A fascinating aspect revealed in this photograph is the cultivation of land on the hillside, most likely for strawberry growing. Even today, strawberries thrive on the slopes of Cheddar, and this south-facing hillside would have been an ideal location for cultivating these delicate fruits. The presence of vibrant strawberry fields adds a touch of vibrancy to an already stunning scene. The cottages at the foot of the hill are marked as Mark Hole Cottage on maps but were officially designated as a listed building known as Cheddar Pottery in 1985. This historical significance adds another layer to this enchanting image. The surrounding geological features also play a significant role in shaping this landscape's allure. The carboniferous limestone formations found in Cheddar Gorge provide a dramatic backdrop to this idyllic countryside setting. Katherine MacFee beautifully captures all these elements through her lens, transporting viewers back to early 1900s rural life and showcasing both natural splendor and human ingenuity harmoniously coexisting within one frame.
