Donkey in the Well House, Carisbrooke Castle OP06136

CARISBROOKE CASTLE, Isle of Wight. Jacob the donkey in the well house's sixteenth century tread wheel at Carisbrooke Castle, with the well shaft in the foreground. The donkeys at Carisbrooke Castle are always given names beginning with 'J'. When Charles I wrote letters or was planning his escape route whilst a prisoner at Carisbrooke, he always signed his letters with a 'J'. So, for 150 years, all the donkeys at the castle have had a name beginning with 'J'. Photographed by F. N. Broderick. Date range:1850-1900

CHIPPING CAMPDEN, Gloucestershire. A milkmaid with a calf followed by a cart bedecked in flowers and flags form part of the procession through the Cotswold town during the Floral Festival. The Flower Festival was part of Chipping Campden's long established tradition of Whitsun festivities that continued up until the outbreak of the First World War. Photographed by Henry Taunt in 1896

BIRMINGHAM GENERAL HOSPITAL, Steelhouse Lane, Small Heath, Birmingham. Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein (formerly Princess Helena, daughter of Queen Victoria) arriving by carriage at Birmingham General Hospital during the opening ceremony. Princess Christian became president of the Royal British Nurses' Association and undertook an extensive programme of royal engagements including the opening of William Henman's General Hospital.
