Crucifixion EMM01 / 01 / 046

St Mary The Virgins Church, Westwood, Wiltshire. Two joined watercolours, by Elsie Matley Moore, covering the upper and lower part of a stained glass window showing a Crucifixion scene. A handwritten note on the index card for this painting reads: A variant of the Lily Crucifixions which were popular in the mid to late 15th century. The idea of the Cross springing from the Lily of the Anunciation is entirely English, and only 9 examples are now known. The underlying thought is to link together the whole earthly life of our Lord as one redemptive act. 1940-1945

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique piece of art history, showcasing the Crucifixion EMM01 / 01 / 046 at St Mary The Virgin's Church in Westwood, Wiltshire. Created by Elsie Matley Moore during the years of 1940-1945, this masterpiece consists of two joined watercolours that beautifully cover the upper and lower sections of a stained glass window. The painting depicts a Crucifixion scene with an intriguing twist. A handwritten note on the index card accompanying this artwork reveals its significance as a variant of the Lily Crucifixions popular in the mid to late 15th century. What sets it apart is its entirely English origin, with only nine known examples remaining today. The concept behind this remarkable creation is to connect all aspects of Jesus' earthly life into one redemptive act. Symbolically linking the Cross emerging from the Lily of Annunciation, Elsie Matley Moore skillfully portrays her interpretation through vivid colors and meticulous attention to detail. This aerial biblical illustration transports viewers back to medieval times while evoking profound religious sentiments. It serves as both an artistic marvel and a testament to faith throughout history. Preserved by Historic England, this photograph immortalizes Elsie Matley Moore's contribution to religious artistry for generations to come.
