Krak des Chevalier, Syria XAWF04841
Crac des Chevaliers, or Hosn al Akrad, Syria. The earlier fort was given to the Knights Hospitallers in 1142 and became their main military base for over a century. THe fortress was eventually captured by the Mamluk Sultan Baibars in 1271. Photographed by Aerofilms Ltd; date uncertain, probably 1950s. Designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.
