Granite facade MBC01_04_094
High Street, Slough, Berkshire. The front of the Wimpy restaurant at 145 High Street, a former Burton store with a polished granite facade.
The building was previously numbered 83-85 High Street. Historic mapping shows that it was renumbered as no. 145 at some point between 1956 and 1967. The facade is probably one of several granite facades to feature on Burton stores, including at Reading, Kingston upon Hull and Bournemouth. It was replaced or covered with a brick facade by the early 21st century, at which time the premises were occupied by a branch of Halifax bank. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the striking granite facade of the former Wimpy restaurant located at 145 High Street in Slough, Berkshire. Once a Burton store, this building boasts an exquisite polished granite exterior that exudes elegance and charm. Originally numbered as 83-85 High Street, historical mapping reveals that it was later renumbered as no. 145 sometime between 1956 and 1967. This particular granite facade is believed to be one of several found on Burton stores across different locations such as Reading, Kingston upon Hull, and Bournemouth. However, with the passage of time and changing architectural trends, the beautiful granite frontage was eventually replaced or concealed by a brick facade during the early years of the twenty-first century. Today, this space is occupied by a branch of Halifax bank. The black and dark tones in this image create a sense of mystery and intrigue while highlighting the art deco elements present in its design. The photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of how our urban landscapes evolve over decades. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot's skillful lens has immortalized this piece of history for us to appreciate - reminding us that even though physical structures may change or disappear entirely, their stories continue to resonate through photographs like these from Historic England.
