EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed view of a plaster panel in Somerset House, Halifax, Calderdale. The panel beautifully illustrates one of Aesop's timeless fables, "The Fox and the Stork". Somerset House itself is steeped in history, originally serving as a town house and two warehouses before being repurposed for various purposes such as banking, commercial ventures, residential spaces, and local authority residencies. Dating back to 1766 for the house and around 1780 for the warehouses, these buildings have witnessed numerous alterations throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. They enclose a charming forecourt on their southern side. Inside the house lies an exquisite display of plasterwork by Guiseppe Cortese. Notably among his creations are panels depicting scenes from Aesop's Fables. George Bernard Wood skillfully captures this remarkable piece of art through his lens. The photograph effortlessly transports viewers into a world where animals come alive with moral lessons to impart. As we gaze upon this image print, we can't help but be reminded of the enduring power of storytelling across generations. Let us cherish this visual representation that intertwines architectural heritage with artistic expression—a testament to human creativity throughout history. It serves as a reminder that even within our ever-changing world, some things remain constant: our fascination with tales passed down through time and our appreciation for craftsmanship that transcends eras.
