EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate process of a rescue excavation in Bedale, Aiskew and Leeming Bar bypass, North Yorkshire. Taken in March 2015 by Dave MacLeod, it showcases the simultaneous archaeological exploration of an Iron Age/Roman ditched enclosure and the construction works for the bypass. From an aerial perspective, we are presented with a mesmerizing view of this historical site. The enclosures can be seen as soilmarks on the ground, revealing their ancient boundaries etched into the landscape over centuries. The meticulous excavation work being carried out by archaeologists is evident through carefully dug trenches that expose layers of history buried beneath. The juxtaposition between past and present is strikingly portrayed as modern road construction machinery coexists harmoniously with these remnants from antiquity. It serves as a reminder that progress should always respect and preserve our rich cultural heritage. Dave MacLeod's skilled photography allows us to appreciate both the significance of this archaeological endeavor and its integration within contemporary society. This image invites contemplation about our connection to those who came before us while acknowledging our responsibility to protect these invaluable traces of human history. Historic England continues to support such endeavors across the country, ensuring that our collective past remains accessible for future generations to explore and learn from.
