This evocative image captures the chaotic aftermath of the sinking of HMS Hermes, a British cruiser that met its fate in the icy waters of the North Sea during the early days of World War I. The date was October 24, 1914, and the German U-boat U-27, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Otto Weddigen, had struck a devastating blow against the British Navy. The Hermes, a Royal Navy cruiser of the Cressy class, was on a mission to protect a convoy of merchant ships en route to Britain when it was torpedoed without warning. The explosion that followed the impact sent a massive plume of smoke and water into the air, as seen in this photograph. The crew, numbering around 600 men, had just minutes to abandon ship before it went under for the final time. The sinking of the Hermes was a significant event in the early stages of the war, as it marked the first time a British warship had been sunk by a German U-boat.
