EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning page is taken from a 17th century manuscript of the Shahnama, or Book of Kings, an epic poem that recounts the history and legends of ancient Persia. The scene depicted here shows Zahhak, a wicked king, enthroned with his two daughters. According to the Shahnama, Zahhak was cursed by a magician to have two serpents growing from his shoulders that would devour the brains of every man who looked directly at him. To avoid this fate, Zahhak ordered that his subjects only look at his reflection in a mirror, while he ruled in secret. In this image, Zahhak sits on his throne, flanked by his two daughters. A reptile, possibly one of the serpents, can be seen coiled at his feet. The intricate details of the painting are brought to life through the use of ink opaque watercolor and gold on paper. The rich colors and ornate patterns reflect the artistic traditions of the Islamic world during the 1610s. This page is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Shahnama, which continues to be an important part of Iranian cultural heritage. The manuscript is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), providing a glimpse into the artistic and literary history of the Middle East.
