EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-century triptych, titled "Worship of the Golden Calf" or "Triptych with the Adoration of the Golden Calf," is a masterpiece by the renowned Dutch artist Lucas van Leyden, created around 1530. The painting depicts a biblical scene from the Old Testament, specifically the moment of disobedience and idolatry by the Israelites during the Exodus from Egypt. The central panel showcases the Golden Calf, an idol formed from melted gold, being worshipped by a lively group of people, both men and women. The scene is filled with festivities and revelry, as the Israelites celebrate their newfound deity on the foot of Mount Sinai, represented by the rocky landscape in the background. The mountain, identified as Jebel Musa or Mount Sinai, is also home to Moses, who is shown in the left panel, shocked and horrified by the idolatry of his people. He holds the Ten Commandments, symbolizing God's laws, which have been broken. The right panel of the triptych features a portrait of a man, believed to be the donor or patron of the painting, and his wife, who is shown in a more subdued and contemplative pose. The triptych's intricate details, vibrant colors, and dynamic composition are characteristic of the Renaissance style, making it a significant heritage art piece from the Netherlands. Oil on panel, the painting measures approximately 54.5 x 73.5 cm and is currently housed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
