Wolseley motor launch under way, 1911. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes

Wolseley motor launch under way, 1911. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

EDITORS COMMENTS
Wolseley Motor Launch: A Glimpse into the Golden Age of Water Transport". This print showcases a Wolseley motor launch gracefully gliding through the waters in 1911. Created by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, this image offers a glimpse into the rich history of British motor vehicle manufacturer, Wolseley Motors. Founded in the early 1900s by Vickers, Wolseley Motors not only excelled in producing automobiles but also ventured into building marine power-units for various watercraft. Initially collaborating with Teddington Launch Works to supply engines for launches, their success led to an increased demand for marine engines across different vessels. From hydroplanes and cruisers to passenger ferries and lifeboats, Wolseley's engineering prowess extended beyond land vehicles. Many larger vessels were expertly constructed by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes on the picturesque Isle-of-Wight. The monochrome composition beautifully captures the elegance of this pleasure boat as it cuts through The Solent waters near Cowes. With its sleek hull design and powerful engine crafted by William Umpleby Kirk himself, this motor launch represents both innovation and luxury during its time. As we admire this snapshot from a bygone era, let us appreciate how transportation has evolved over centuries while cherishing these remnants that remind us of our rich heritage in automotive and maritime industries.
