EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken between 1913 and 1917 by the renowned Harris & Ewing studio, we find William Howard Taft in the prime of his political career. Taft, who served as the 27th President of the United States from 1909 to 1913, is depicted here in a full-length portrait, standing confidently before a plain backdrop. During the years captured in this image, Taft's political journey took an unexpected turn. After leaving the White House, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1921. In this photograph, however, he is still very much the president, dressed in a formal suit and wearing a serious expression. The image captures a moment of interaction between Taft and an unidentified man, who extends his hand in a friendly gesture. The woman standing beside the man, likely Martha Ewing Kuntze or Martha Ewing Newcombe, could be a family member or a close associate. The photograph was taken at the Harris Ewing studio, which was known for its high-quality glass negatives, and the image has a timeless, almost ethereal quality. Taft's presidency was marked by significant political and social changes in the United States, including the passage of the 16th Amendment, which established the federal income tax, and the beginning of American involvement in World War I. This photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in American history, as well as a portrait of a man who left an indelible mark on the country's political landscape.
