EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print captures the timeless image of Wild Bill Hickok's monument, located in Deadwood, South Dakota. Born on May 27, 1837, in Homer, Illinois, James Butler Hickok, better known as Wild Bill, was a legendary figure of the American West. Known for his wild demeanor, Hickok was a gambler, showman, scout, and lawman. He gained notoriety for his quick draw skills and his encounters with various outlaws. On August 2, 1876, Hickok was fatally shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall while playing poker at Nuttal & Mann's No. 10 Saloon in Deadwood. McCall was later tried and hanged for the crime. Hickok's body now lies in Deadwood's Mount Moriah Cemetery, where this monument stands as a tribute to the legendary figure. The monument, created by renowned photographer John C.H. Grabill, features a sculpture of Hickok's head and shoulders on a tall, imposing monument. The image captures the essence of the American West and the meeting of frontier lawlessness and military discipline. The monument serves as a reminder of the folklore and heritage of the 19th century, a time of lawlessness and lawmen, of fugitives and soldiers, and of the enduring spirit of the American people. This photograph print is a valuable historical artifact, documenting a significant moment in American history and the legacy of a man who embodied the wild and untamed spirit of the American West.
