Watering-Places of England - Clifton, from Leigh Wood, 1850. Creators: Birket Foster, Edmund Evans
Watering-Places of England - Clifton, from Leigh Wood, 1850. Clifton, near Bristol, differs from the other watering-places in being far distant from the sea. It is resorted to partly on account of its hot springs, and partly from the extreme picturesqueneness and beauty of its scenery. The point of view taken in the accompanying Illustration gives, perhaps, its most striking and distinctive aspect...The river is very beautiful at high water; and then a residence in this pleasant place is made more interesting by the constant passing and re-passing of steam-boats and other vessels which ply between Bristol and various ports in the Bristol Channel, in Ireland, &c...Clifton is a very delightful place for those who desire retirement, and can take delight in rural and picturesque beauty. There are many excellent hotels; and, as a general rule, the lodging-houses are convenient, and not too expensive'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Watering-Places of England: Clifton, near Bristol, is a unique resort unlike any other in England, as it is situated far from the sea. Its primary attractions are the hot springs and the breathtaking picturesque beauty of the area. The view depicted in this print by Birket Foster, published by Edmund Evans for the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases Clifton's most distinctive aspect. The River Avon, which is particularly beautiful at high water, adds to the charm of this place. Residing in Clifton becomes even more intriguing due to the constant passage of steam-boats and other vessels navigating the Bristol Channel and beyond. Clifton is an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility and appreciation for rural and picturesque landscapes. The town boasts numerous excellent hotels, and the lodging houses are convenient and reasonably priced, making it an accessible retreat for visitors." Birket Foster (1825-1874) was a renowned English painter and illustrator, known for his landscapes and architectural views. Edmund Evans (1826-1905) was a pioneering English photographer and printmaker, famous for his chromolithographs and collaborations with prominent artists of the time. Together, they captured the essence of Clifton's allure in this print. This image, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the charm and appeal of Clifton as it was perceived during the mid-19th century. The print invites us to imagine the serene beauty of the place and the excitement of the constant river traffic. It is a testament to the enduring allure of Clifton and the English countryside.
