Watching a Waterfall, 1790. During the Edo period, Japanese literati artists such as Tani Buncho loved depicting the theme of Gazing at the Waterfall by painting a blue and green landscape in the format of a hanging scroll. Watching a Waterfall is one of his masterpieces, evoking poetic sensations through his use of colour and dramatic composition. Tani inscribed the painting with two lines of a seven-word poem: " The stone cliff layered with rocks is extremely high. Falling waterfalls in the sky reverberate the cloud."

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Tani Buncho is a captivating masterpiece that transports viewers to the serene landscapes of Japan's Edo period. This hanging scroll, delicately painted with ink and color on silk, showcases the artist's profound love for depicting nature's beauty. Buncho was part of a group of literati artists who found inspiration in the theme of Gazing at the Waterfall. In this particular artwork, he skillfully captures the essence of flowing water cascading down a stone cliff layered with rocks. The dramatic composition draws our eyes upward towards the falling waterfalls that seem to reverberate through the sky and clouds. The use of blue and green hues creates a tranquil atmosphere, inviting us to immerse ourselves in this poetic scene. As we gaze upon this work, we can almost hear the soothing sound of rushing water and feel its refreshing mist against our skin. Tani Buncho further enhances his painting by inscribing two lines from a seven-word poem onto it. These words add an additional layer of depth and evoke emotions associated with awe-inspiring natural wonders. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art, "Watching a Waterfall" stands as one of Tani Buncho's masterpieces—a testament to his artistic prowess during Japan's Edo period.
