Watching a sand whirlwind from the top of Hawara pyramid, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
Watching a sand whirlwind from the top of Hawara pyramid, Egypt, 1905. What a picture of desolation! And yet we are standing in the midst of one of the most fertile tracts in the world. These rough sun-dried bricks at our feet form the summit of the pyramid of Hawara, which stands in the mouth of the Fayum, and from this elevated point of view we are looking through the valley which connects the depression of the Fayum with the Nile valley. Out yonder on the horizon is the pyramid of lllahun. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1905 in Egypt. The image captures a moment of desolation and wonder as a man stands atop the Hawara pyramid, gazing out at a sand whirlwind swirling in the distance. Despite the barrenness depicted here, it is important to note that this location is actually one of the most fertile tracts in the world. The photograph showcases the rough sun-dried bricks that form the summit of Hawara pyramid, situated at the mouth of Fayum. From this elevated viewpoint, we can see through the valley connecting Fayum's depression with Nile Valley. On the horizon lies another majestic pyramid called Illahun. This stereoscopic card from Underwood & Underwood's series titled "Egypt Through The Stereoscope" provides us with an intriguing glimpse into ancient Egyptian geography and history. It reminds us that even amidst seemingly desolate landscapes, there is often hidden beauty and significance waiting to be discovered. As we observe this lone figure standing against nature's powerful forces, we are reminded of humanity's smallness in comparison to vast natural phenomena like sandstorms. This print serves as both a testament to human curiosity and resilience while also highlighting Egypt's rich cultural heritage dating back thousands of years.
