Walled city of El Kab, seen from a door of a tomb in the cliffs, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood

Walled city of El Kab, seen from a door of a tomb in the cliffs, Egypt, 1905. That sombre grey wall, beginning on the left and extending as far as the eye can follow on the right, is the fortified wall of the city known to the ancient Egyptians as Nekhan. It is the only city wall, practically intact, which has survived from such a remote age in any century; for it was erected at least in the days of Abraham, not less than two thousand years before Christ, and possibly much earlier. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the walled city of El Kab, as seen from a door of a tomb nestled within the cliffs of Egypt. The somber grey wall stretches endlessly from left to right, revealing the fortified structure known to ancient Egyptians as Nekhan. Remarkably, this is the only practically intact city wall that has survived from such an ancient era, dating back at least two thousand years before Christ and possibly even earlier. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness a landscape frozen in history. It captures the essence of Egypt's rich heritage and its deep connection with its ancient roots. As we gaze upon this monochrome scene, we are reminded of the enduring legacy left by civilizations long gone. Stereoscopic photography adds depth and dimension to this stunning view, immersing us further into the awe-inspiring surroundings. Through this series titled "Egypt Through the Stereoscope". James H Breasted provides insightful text that enhances our understanding of this remarkable location. This photograph not only serves as a visual testament to El Kab's undamaged walls but also offers a glimpse into daily life during that time period. The presence of people going about their routines adds human interest and reminds us that these ruins were once vibrant cities bustling with activity. As we contemplate this print by Underwood & Underwood in collaboration with Keystone and James Henry Breasted, we cannot help but marvel at how it encapsulates both beauty and historical significance within its frame.
