Volunteer Drill-shed at Birkenhead for the 1st Cheshire Volunteer Engineers, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Volunteer Drill-shed at Birkenhead for the 1st Cheshire Volunteer Engineers, 1862. The idea of the building is taken from a shed designed by Captain Fowke, R.E. (the designer of the new Exhibition building of 1862)...The length of the building is 200 feet, the breadth 52 feet, and height 28 feet 6 inches. When lighted up the interior of the building has a very fine effect - upwards of 200 gas jets throwing a strong and effective light throughout. An orchestra capable of accommodating 150 performers has been erected and the acoustic principles are admirable. The cost of the shed will be about £500. The house in front will be appropriated for storerooms, an armoury, and classrooms. Messrs. J. and W. Walker were the contractors'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1862, showcases the Volunteer Drill-shed at Birkenhead for the 1st Cheshire Volunteer Engineers. The design of the building was inspired by a shed created by Captain Fowke, R.E., who also designed the new Exhibition building of that year. The drill-shed measures 200 feet in length, 52 feet in breadth, and 28 feet 6 inches in height. When illuminated, the interior of the building creates a stunning effect with over 200 gas jets casting a strong and effective light. An orchestra capable of seating 150 performers has been installed, and the acoustic properties are exceptional. The cost of constructing the shed was estimated to be around £500. The small house in front will be utilized for storerooms, an armory, and classrooms. Messrs. J. and W. Walker were responsible for the building contract. The shed's design, with its impressive use of gas lighting and spacious interior, reflects the military's growing emphasis on drill and training during the 19th century. The photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the architectural and military history of Birkenhead, Merseyside, England.
