EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Fra Angelico, a renowned artist from the early 15th century. Titled "Virgin and Child with St Anthony of Padua and St Thomas Aquinas" this masterpiece depicts an iconic scene from Christianity. In the painting, St Thomas Aquinas, also known as Doctor Angelicus, is portrayed holding an open book, possibly his famous Summa Theologiae. On the other side stands St Anthony of Padua, recognized as The Hammer of Heretics, clutching both an open book and a delicate madonna lily. The composition symbolizes the religious divide between two influential orders during that time period: the Dominicans who followed Aquinas's teachings and the Franciscans who adhered to Duns Scotus's doctrine. Originally housed in San Domenico da Fiesole monastery in Italy, this remarkable piece now resides within the esteemed collection of Russia's Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Fra Angelico's attention to detail is evident through his portrayal of each figure's intricate clothing and their serene expressions. This renaissance fresco captures not only religious devotion but also highlights themes such as family bonds and motherhood through its depiction of Virgin Mary cradling baby Jesus. With its rich colors and symbolic elements like halos and cassocks, this portrait offers viewers a glimpse into medieval Christian artistry while simultaneously inviting contemplation on faith and spirituality.
