View of Vedala [sic] Palace of the Grand Master, located in the Boschetto, Malta, 1778. The site of Verdala Palace was originally occupied by a hunting lodge, built in the 1550s or 1560s during the reign of Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette. The lodge was built in the Boschetto, a large semi-landscaped area used by knights of the Order of Saint John for hunting game. The hunting lodge was expanded into a palace in 1586, during the reign of Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle. Drawing from the album Voyage to Italy, Sicily and Malta

EDITORS COMMENTS
This view of Verdala Palace, painted by Louis Ducros in 1778, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and beauty of Malta during the 18th century. The palace, located in the Boschetto area, was originally a hunting lodge built in the 1550s or 1600s for the Knights of the Order of Saint John. During the reign of Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle in 1586, the lodge was expanded into a magnificent palace. The site's tranquil surroundings, nestled on a hillside, are depicted in this stunning watercolor drawing. Verdala Palace stands proudly against the backdrop of the rolling hills and wooded landscape, its white façade reflecting the clear blue waters of the distant sea. The palace's gardens, with their lush greenery, add to the idyllic scene, making it a popular destination for travelers during the romantic era. Louis Ducros, a Swiss artist, captured the essence of this Maltese landmark with remarkable detail and skill. His use of chalk on paper and watercolor paint brings the scene to life, transporting us back in time to an era of grandeur and beauty. This work of art is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Malta and the enduring allure of its scenic landscapes.
