View taken in the Russian colony of Novo-Arkhangelsk (Sitkha island) (northwest... 19th century. Creators: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Godefroy Engelmann)
View taken in the Russian colony of Novo-Arkhangelsk (Sitkha island) (northwest coast of America), 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph depicts a scenic view of the Russian colony of Novo-Arkhangelsk, located on Sitkha island in the northwest coast of America, during the 19th century. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were published after the circumnavigation voyage of the corvette Seniavin, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke. The expedition, which began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean, was a significant scientific naval survey in the first part of the 19th century. In this image, we see a picturesque scene of the Russian settlement, with log cabins nestled among the trees and a footbridge crossing a stream. The colony's church, with its distinctive onion-domed roof, is visible in the background. The meeting of frontiers is evident in the juxtaposition of the Russian buildings and the rugged, natural landscape, with rocks jutting out from the water's edge. The lithograph was created by the skilled hands of Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and Godefroy Engelmann, two European artists who were part of the Seniavin expedition. Their work captures the daily life of the Russian settlers and the beauty of the Alaskan frontier, providing a unique glimpse into history. This lithograph is now part of the collections of the Library of Congress, a testament to its historical significance and artistic merit. The image invites us to imagine the experiences of the explorers and settlers who braved the unknown to discover new lands and expand the boundaries of human knowledge.
