EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century view, captured by Dutch artist Pieter Jansz Saenredam, showcases the Palace of Frederik V, Elector Palatine, and the Sint-Cunerakerk in Rhenen, Netherlands. The Palace, also known as Koningshuis, served as the summer residence for Frederick V of the Palatinate, who was crowned "Winter King" of Bohemia in 1619 but was later defeated in the Battle of White Mountain and forced into exile. The Sint-Cunerakerk, a Gothic church, stands proudly in the background with its iconic 81.8-meter (268 ft) high belfry and clock tower. The church has been a significant religious site since the 8th century, housing the relics of Saint Cunera. This meticulously detailed watercolor painting, with its rich colors and intricate architectural depictions, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of the past and the cultural heritage of the Low Countries. The Palace, unfortunately, no longer exists, having been demolished in 1812. Today, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam preserves this precious artwork as a testament to the history and art of the Netherlands.
