A View of Naples through a Window, 1824. Creator: Franz Ludwig Catel (German, 1778-1856)
A View of Naples through a Window, 1824. Catel lived most of his life in Rome, where he usually painted landscapes and peasant scenes that were very popular with tourists. He often traveled through Italy, and in 1824 he visited Naples with the famous German neoclassical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841). Schinkel noted in his diary that the two friends had rented an apartment in the " Albergo alla Grand Europa." It must have been from that apartment that Catel painted this captivating view of a sun-drenched afternoon in Naples. We will never know whether Mount Vesuvius actually released a smoke plume when this view was painted, but it certainly adds drama to the composition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "A View of Naples through a Window, 1824" transports us back to a sun-drenched afternoon in the bustling city. Created by Franz Ludwig Catel, a German artist known for his landscapes and peasant scenes, this painting showcases his talent for capturing the beauty of Italy. Catel often traveled throughout Italy and in 1824 he visited Naples with his friend Karl Friedrich Schinkel, a renowned neoclassical architect. The two friends rented an apartment in the Albergo alla Grand Europa during their stay. It is believed that it was from this very apartment that Catel painted this mesmerizing view. The composition itself is filled with vibrant colors and exquisite details. We are treated to a panoramic scene of Naples as seen through an open window. In the distance, we can spot Mount Vesuvius towering over the cityscape. Though we cannot confirm if there was actually smoke emanating from the volcano at the time Catel painted this piece, its inclusion adds an element of drama to the overall composition. Mounted on canvas and created using oil on paper technique, this artwork now resides in The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection. This print allows us to appreciate Catel's skillful brushwork and experience firsthand the allure of Naples during that era.
