Valley Lake, Mount Gambier, South Australia, 1886. Artist: H Baker

Valley Lake, Mount Gambier, South Australia, 1886. Mount Gambier, first seen by European settlers in 1800, is thought to have been the first geographical feature in South Australia to be identified by Europeans. It was named for the British admiral James Gambier. The aboriginal name for it was Erengbalam (place of the eaglehawk). The Mount Gambier complex of maar volcanoes was formed about 4, 900 years ago. A maar volcanos crater may have very little of a built-up rim, and is often filled with water. Wood engraving from Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, Vol II, by Andrew Garran, illustrated under the supervision of Frederic B Schell, (Picturesque Atlas Publishing Co, 1886)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1886, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Valley Lake in Mount Gambier, South Australia. The artist behind this masterpiece is H Baker, who skillfully captures the essence of this enchanting location. Mount Gambier holds a significant place in Australian history as it was one of the first geographical features identified by European settlers upon their arrival in 1800. Named after British admiral James Gambier, its original aboriginal name was Erengbalam, meaning "place of the eaglehawk". This region is known for its maar volcanoes, formed approximately 4,900 years ago. Maar volcanoes often have minimal built-up rims and are frequently filled with water. The wood engraving from Picturesque Atlas of Australasia transports us back to a time when this natural wonder was still active. The monochrome depiction adds an air of mystery and nostalgia to the scene. As we gaze at this print, we can't help but marvel at nature's power and beauty that has captivated generations throughout history. Andrew Garran supervised Frederic B Schell's illustrations for this atlas volume while H Baker contributed his artistic talent to immortalize Valley Lake's splendor on paper. This historical artifact reminds us not only of Australia's rich geography but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and exploration during the 19th century.
