Untitled Photograph, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Untitled Photograph, 1909. This image is from Vidy territorii Sibirskogo kazach'ego voiska (Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev, captured in 1909, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. This image is part of the "Vidy territorii Sibirskogo kazach'ego voiska" (Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host), one of three albums created for the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The photograph depicts a lone Cossack standing outdoors, dressed in traditional apparel. He wears a beehive-shaped hat, a long, flowing coat, and trousers, all typical of the Cossack military uniform. The man's stern expression and strong posture convey a sense of determination and resilience, reflecting the challenging rural life in the region. The image was taken during Katanaev's journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Katanaev, the son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev, captured these moments for the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk between 1891 and 1918. The "Untitled Photograph" is a testament to the meeting of frontiers, showcasing the unique blend of rural and military life in the region. It offers a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the history and heritage of the Cossacks in western Siberia and Kazakhstan. This full-length portrait, taken in a rural setting, remains an essential historical document, preserving the legacy of a bygone era. The man's uniform, with its white and black color palette, adds to the timeless appeal of the image, making it a significant addition to any collection of historic photography.
