EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant piece of American history - the U. S. Army M-1879 junior officers dress coat worn by John Hanks Alexander around 1890. Alexander, an African-American trailblazer, holds the distinction of being the first black officer in the United States armed forces to hold a regular command position. The navy blue wool frock coat exudes elegance and authority with its double-breasted reverse-front design. Adorned with fourteen metal buttons featuring an embossed eagle clutching an olive branch and three arrows, this uniform symbolizes both peace and strength. The shield on the chest bears a prominent "C" at its center. Crafted from dark navy blue wool broadcloth, this dress coat is a testament to Alexander's remarkable achievements within the military. Its short standing collar fastens at the center front neck with a single metal hook-and-eye closure. Preserved within the National Museum of African American History and Culture, this artifact represents not only Alexander's personal journey but also reflects upon America's complex cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of our nation's progress towards equality while acknowledging those who paved the way for future generations. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to a pivotal moment in history when bravery shattered barriers and diversity became an integral part of our armed forces' fabric.
