Thorwaldsens statue of Lord Byron, 1845. Creator: W. J. Linton
Thorwaldsens statue of Lord Byron, 1845. Sculpture of Byron by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen: This picturesque work of art, after lying for more than a dozen years in the cellars of the London Docks, has, at length, found a destination at the upper end of the Library of Trinity College, Cambridge...Besides a general coarseness of handling, excepting about the head and in the modelling of the hand, there are faults of detail...The right leg of the figure - which is extended, to rest on a lower plane (the left being raised on the broken shaft) is shapeless - its upper portion being rather feminine than that of a man. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Thorwaldsen's statue of Lord Byron, created in 1845. After being hidden away in the London Docks for over a decade, this picturesque work of art has finally found its rightful place at the upper end of Trinity College Library in Cambridge. The sculpture, crafted by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen, exudes both power and vulnerability. While there are some flaws in the execution, such as a general coarseness of handling and issues with detail, particularly evident in the shapeless right leg extended to rest on a lower plane, these imperfections do not diminish the overall impact of this magnificent piece. The head and hand exhibit exceptional attention to detail and skillful modeling. Lord Byron himself was an influential figure in British literature during the 19th century. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" captures his essence as a poet and man. With his intense gaze and commanding presence, he stands tall among other statues within Trinity College's esteemed collection. The print evokes a sense of history and reverence for both artistry and education. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Lord Byron as well as an ode to Bertel Thorwaldsen's talent as a sculptor. This image serves as a reminder that great works can be rediscovered even after years spent hidden away – finding their way back into public view where they can inspire generations to come.
