The Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh laying the Foundation Stone of the new Eddystone Lighthouse, August 19,1879

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photograph captured in 1879, we witness a momentous event as Prince Albert Edward, the future King Edward VII, and his brother Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha lay the Foundation Stone of the new Eddystone Lighthouse. The towering structure stands proudly against the backdrop of Cornwall's rugged coast. Designed by James Nicholas Douglass with a mission to protect shipping from treacherous Eddystone Rocks near Plymouth Devon England, this lighthouse symbolizes both danger and hope. As waves crash against its base, it serves as a beacon guiding vessels safely through perilous waters. The image captures an important ceremonial moment as these royal figures take part in building Britain's maritime heritage. With flags fluttering in the wind above them, they stand united in their commitment to safeguarding lives at sea. This historical print is not just a testament to engineering prowess but also showcases British resilience and determination. It reminds us that even amidst turbulent times at sea or on land during Queen Victoria's reign (1837-1901), progress was always possible. Preserved within "The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria" this photograph offers us a glimpse into an era when innovation met tradition. It invites us to reflect on how human ingenuity can conquer nature's challenges while honoring our rich history.
