The Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, mid 19th century. Creator: WH Egleton

The Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, mid 19th century. Biblical scene, from Judges 16: 21: But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. Samson, having been weakened after Delilah cut off his strength-giving hair as he slept, is captured by the Philistines who blind him by gouging out his eyes. He is then put to work turning a large millstone and grinding grain in prison in Gaza. Here Delilah appears to express remorse for her cruel act. Samsons captors have brought him out of prison to make sport of him during the feast in the Temple of Dagon. Engraving

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, mid 19th century. Creator: WH Egleton In this powerful engraving from the mid-19th century, artist WH Egleton captures a haunting biblical scene from Judges 16:21. The image depicts the tragic fate of Samson after he falls victim to Delilah's deceitful betrayal. Samson, once known for his incredible strength granted by his long hair, lies helpless as the Philistines cruelly gouge out his eyes. Bound with fetters of brass, he is condemned to a life of grinding grain in prison in Gaza. Delilah herself appears in the picture, her face filled with remorse for her treacherous act that led to Samson's downfall. It is a moment of regret amidst an atmosphere of punishment and ridicule orchestrated by Samson's captors during a feast at the Temple of Dagon. Egleton skillfully portrays the emotions etched on each character's face - despair on Samson's weakened countenance contrasting with Delilah's expression reflecting inner turmoil over her actions. The engraving serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences that can arise from betrayal and deception. Through this artwork, we are transported back to ancient Israelite times where faith and religion played significant roles in shaping lives. It prompts contemplation about themes such as strength versus weakness, regret versus redemption, and ultimately reminds us that even those who possess great power can fall prey to their own vulnerabilities.
