The European Concert, 1897

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print by artist Henri Meyer that offers a satirical portrayal of the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. This conflict, also known as the Thirty Days War, erupted when Greece's nationalist government declared war on the Ottoman Empire following a rebellion in January 1897 among the Greek population on Crete. Despite Greece's aspirations for territorial gains, the war concluded with no such achievements and was resolved through peace negotiations mediated by major European powers. In this colorful and detailed illustration from Le Petit Journal dated May 9th, 1897, we witness an artistic representation of various nations involved in this historical event. The artwork showcases soldiers dressed in their distinctive national costumes: Austrian troops wearing traditional attire alongside French infantrymen donning their military uniforms. German soldiers are depicted playing musical instruments like tubas while Turkish soldiers wear fezzes and carry arms. Meyer's print not only highlights the military aspect of warfare but also incorporates elements of satire and stereotyping prevalent during that era. Through his artistry, he captures both the seriousness and absurdity inherent in conflicts between nations. This historic image serves as a reminder of how art can provide valuable insights into significant events from our past. It invites us to reflect upon the complexities surrounding international relations during this period while appreciating Meyer's skillful craftsmanship and attention to detail.
