The Embankment, from Charing Cross Bridge, (1881). Creator: Unknown
The Embankment, from Charing Cross Bridge, (1881). The Embankment Gardens in London were created in 1874, on the reclaimed land on the inward side of the Victoria Embankment next to the River Thames. At left is the York Watergate, built in 1626, which gave access to the Thames from York House, a mansion on the Strand. The building of the Thames Embankment left it 150 yards from the river. From Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places. Westminster and the Western Suburbs, by Edward Walford, Vol. III. [Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. The Embankment, from Charing Cross Bridge
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that takes us back to the bustling streets of Victorian London. Captured in 1881 by an unknown creator, this aerial view showcases the beauty of the newly created Embankment Gardens along the Victoria Embankment. In this snapshot of history, we are transported to a time when England was at its peak as a global power. The image features prominent landmarks such as Buckingham Gate and York Watergate, which provided access to the Thames from York House. However, due to the construction of the Thames Embankment, these structures now stand 150 yards away from the river. The monochrome palette adds a sense of nostalgia and highlights intricate details within each building and street below. As we gaze upon this scene frozen in time, we can almost hear the sounds of horse-drawn carriages clattering on cobblestone lanes. This print not only captures a moment in history but also serves as a reminder of London's rich architectural heritage. It invites us to explore our past through its publication in "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places". Let it transport you back to an era where occupation thrived alongside nature's geographical features - where cityscapes blended seamlessly with riverside parks. As we admire this remarkable piece captured over a century ago by an anonymous artist, let us appreciate how far we have come while cherishing our connection with Britain's vibrant past.
