EDITORS COMMENTS
The Banqueting Room As It Is To-Day, 1939 captures the grandeur and opulence of The Royal Pavilion in Brighton, Sussex. This former royal residence, dating back to 1787, served as a seaside retreat for the Prince Regent, later known as King George IV. Architect John Nash extended the original house in 1815 with stunning Indo-Saracenic domes and minarets that added an exotic touch to its design. In this photograph taken by Henry D. Roberts, we are transported into the magnificent banqueting hall of The Royal Pavilion. The room is adorned with intricate Chinese-inspired chinoiserie decorations and features a breathtaking chandelier hanging from above. Mythical creatures such as dragons can be seen intricately carved into various elements of the room's interior decoration. The image beautifully showcases the fusion of Eastern and Western influences that define this architectural masterpiece. With its monochrome aesthetic, it evokes a sense of timelessness while capturing a moment frozen in history during the 1930s. This print serves as a testament to both British heritage and architectural brilliance. It allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship involved but also offers a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle enjoyed by royalty centuries ago.
